“Showmanship certainly helps, Harriet.” Jason laid down a pencil and leaned back in his chair. The light from outside silhouetted her nicely in the doorway—floppy hat she’d taken to wearing, hour glass figure, and fraying golden braid—he coughed and quickly sat back up. “You made good time. All the way to Nugget and back in 4 hours.”
“It’s not a hard trail.”
“We picked up three new accounts today.”
Harriet commenced peeling off her riding gloves and turned back around to watch the boys taking her team out of harness. “That’s good news.” She motioned at her teenagers. “How are they doing?”
“Fine. I’m not riding with them on the short hauls anymore. They can handle them.”
“I knew they’d be all right.”
“I think you’re pushing them too hard, though.”

She spun back around and for an instant he thought she might lob a glove at him. “Fun? We don’t have time for fun. There’s too much work to do. We’ve got to build up this business and beat Reives. I’ll have some fun when we win Mr. Winslet’s contract.”
Jason knew there was no arguing with her. Danged if she wasn’t driven. “Speaking of Reives, I ran into him today. He said your circus act on Main Street didn’t impress him.”
“I don’t care what he thinks.” She snatched off her hat. “In fact, I hope he keeps taking me for granted. We’ll walk away with this contest.”
“I hope you’re right, Harriet. I hope you’re right.”
She set her gloves and hat on a shelf just inside the door and sat down opposite him. “Let’s divvy up the routes for tomorrow. I need to get home and get supper started.”
Jason studied her for a second more, drawn to her, bewitched by her, but deeply frustrated with her. Lord, is she ever going to see past all that hurt to…what’s right in front of her? He dragged a clipboard over in front of him. “All righty. Here’s what we’ve got…”
